gilford lake camping trip

so i got a vacation. yippee! i am taking the family on the first camping trip of the year to gilford lake. it should be a good time. i got the whole day off today to prepare. i got some calls from work and had to answer a few emails but no big deal. at least i hope not for the wife.

so sue gets the kids from school early at 2 and we pack the last of the things and were off. it took us about a little over an hour to get there. didn't even get lost. sue got the map off rand mcnally, which btw is the best map site ever.

so we roll in and find the site and setup camp. the first thing i had to do was to get the camper setup. so i go through the regular steps and start to crank er up. we have a forest river popup tent camper. i get it the roof about a foot and snap! the cable breaks. so after a little analysis, my friend alan and i head off to the hardware store to find some parts.

we get there and i had to get the guys' attention because they were just about to close. we get in and get some cable clamps, get back to the site, clamp the cable and were back in business.

we were camping with 13 other families that are all related. we get the privilege of hanging out with them once a year at their "Long Family" camping event. there is also another one called the "Taylor Jamboree" on July 4th that we are invited to but we will have to see what is my work schedule. it would be nice to go. below is Ronnie's "chuck tent". this is where the cookoff contest happens, which again, i did not win this year :(

one of my wifes fun things to do is to go fishing. i sometimes find it boring but decided to get a license this time around. we all caught some fish, if thats what you could call them. they were tiny, but all had a round of fun at the docks.

as you can see here, sue is showing her prize catch of the day. i told her to leave it on the hook for bait :)

here is alana hangin around. also we decided to bring our canine coalbee. this was a little bit of a challenge because he usually gets sick in the car. however, he did well on both the trip out and back. he provided lots of fun for everyone in our stay. he kept guard over us at night in the camper and barked at other sneaky dogs in the area.

below, in the upper right corner is what is called a birdsnest. it is made up of hashbrowns done up in a pie iron with a hole in the middle with an egg done to your liking. very good but a little bland for me.

alana had her moment with her seafood catch! it was all of 1 inch bigger than the one sue caught and all of 3 inches bigger than any i caught.

here is sue making her famous calico beans in the dutch oven. this would be the first time they have been done in the oven. she did a great job on them and they did not last long in the "chuck tent"

as you can see, we eat a lot of food when we camp. we do almost everything we can over open fire and in the dutch over if possible. here, sue is trying a second internet recipe for calico chicken which was fantastic along with "beer butt chicken" along with potatos in the pan.

i bet you are wondering what in the world is that thing. i will give you one guess. nope. it is yet another one of alana's teeth. it came loose and she just had to pull it. it seems like she has lost a few in the last month or two. she is growing up so fast. i love camping trips with my family even though i am not sure how they put up with me.

this is the best ever. every year the group does some kind of drawing or picking out of a hat some kind of ticket. this year they went around and wrote done license plates numbers. when they called it out, i could not believe it. i won! i never win anything. everyone thought i was kind of strange that i know my license plate number by heart. come to think of it, i am not sure why i know it either.

gonna try to go on july 4th so stay tuned for more fund in the wilderness.
